Amapa Tours supports you with your motorhome trip through Baja California, on the ferry that crosses the Sea of Cortez (Gulf of California) to Los Mochis or El Fuerte, from where you can board the Chepe Express train until you reach the Sierra Tarahumara. During your trip through Mexico, visit the Rarámuris indigenous region, the "Copper Canyon", in one of the 10 most spectacular train trips in the world, while giving your motorhome a few days off in an RV Park where you will be very good care. We will recommend the best stops with beautiful landscapes that you should see on your trip in northwest Mexico.

Day 1

Tuesday: Ferry crossing across the Sea of Cortez Travel in Baja Ferries from Pichilingue in La Paz through the Gulf of California to the port of Topolobampo. You will board the ferry at around 9:00 p.m. which will drive Topolobampo for approximately 7 hours. You will spend the night on board the ferry.

Day 2

Wednesday: Travel from Topolobampo to "El Fuerte"

On Sunday around 6:00 hours arrival at the third largest natural port in the world “Topolobampo”.

Explore the picturesque little fishing village of Topolobampo on a morning walk along the boardwalk.

Before lunch, drive from Topolobampo to “El Maviri” beach through a mangrove forest. Spend some time there and observe the flora and fauna of the region. Later, you can try regional food in one of the local restaurants, the delicious “Tacos de Marlin”, the “Callos de hacha” and the delicious fish “Zarandeado” with homemade “tortillas” while enjoying the waves, the sea breeze and the beautiful weather.

After this relaxing experience, start your trip in the caravan to the colonial city of “El Fuerte” which lasts approximately 2 hours.

Through one of the most fertile growing regions in northern Mexico, you will drive through the young city of Los Mochis and various agricultural areas until you reach the colonial city of El Fuerte.

Here you learn to live in harmony with nature and you will learn how the indigenous “Yoreme-Mayo” traditions have been preserved. They use natural products for their traditional dances, such as the bowls that are half a pumpkin (named “Jumate”) which, when immersed in water, have interesting acoustic properties.

There is much to discover in El Fuerte. Be sure to visit the viewpoint or the Miguel Ángel Morales Ibarra Community Museum. Garments, masks and instruments used in traditional dances are exhibited here, as well as objects from the daily life of the Yoreme indigenous people. From the vantage point you can see the blueberry plantations and the river in the distance.

In 2010, El Fuerte was awarded the name of “Magic Town” for its beauty, culture and history. On a walk you will visit the beautiful Plaza Mayor, the government palace, the museum and some historical buildings.

You will spend the night in a very good park for campers, where your vehicle will be looked after in the next few days.

Day 3

Thursday: Chepe Express train trip from El Fuerte to Bahuichivo

The morning is free, it is recommended to take a raft along the river or visit the Regional Museum.

At the indicated time our driver will pick you up to take you to the train station.

Today the adventure begins aboard the legendary Chepe Express train through the Sierra Madre Occidental.

You will travel the most spectacular section of the entire train route crossing rivers, ravines and bridges until you reach Bahuichivo.

Arrival at the Bahuichivo train station, welcome and transfer to the hotel in Cerocahui. Dinner awaits you at the hotel.

Day 4

Friday: Urique Canyon and transfer from Cerocahui to the Copper Canyon

Today you will visit the impressive Urique Canyon. Your guide will pick you up at the hotel reception after breakfast.

Transfer to the “Cerro del Gallego”, where you will enjoy a spectacular panorama in the highest area towards the town of Urique. Later, you will visit a small cave where the Tarahumaras ladies sell their baskets traditionally woven with pine needles. On the way back, we will stop at various lookout points to appreciate the landscape. You will then be taken back to the hotel in time for lunch.

Around 15:00 hours, transfer by road from Cerocahui to Cooper Canyon.

The rest of the day is free. You can stroll through several lookout points along the Copper Canyon. This hike is easy and follows an old Rarámuri path surrounded by pine and strawberry trees. From any lookout points you can see the three ravines that converge here: Urique – Tararecua and the Copper Canyon.

Your dinner will be served in the restaurant from 19:00 hours.

Day 5

Saturday: Cooper Canyon National Park Tours

We recommend consulting the reception about sunrise time so you don’t miss out on this wonderful experience.

At 9:00 hours, your guide will be waiting for you at the hotel reception to begin your guided excursion to the Balancing Rock and various lookout points.

You will also visit the Copper Canyon National Park, which is located in the heart of the Sierra Tarahumara, between the Posada Barrancas and Divisadero train stations. In addition to the majestic beauty of the landscape, you will find a restaurant with a terrace and glass floor, mountain bike routes for beginners, intermediate and advanced.

In the National Park you can do the following activities and pay directly.

  1. Ride on the longest cable car in Mexico (2,750 m)
  2. Zip Rider ride over dizzying canyons
  3. “Via Ferrata” / Rapel
  4. 7-station zip lines

These activities can also be combined well with a hike “in the heart” of the canyon. Put your hiking skills to the test in the country of the world’s fastest famous runners “Tarahumaras”, and explore this unique mountain world.

After these adrenaline-fueled activities, transfer back to the hotel for lunch.

The afternoon is free to take an optional walk along the shore of the Copper Canyon. Visit a Tarahumara cave, where Rarámuris women offer travelers various handicrafts.

Dinner is served from 7:00 p.m.

Day 6

Sunday: Train ride on the Chepe Express from Divisadero to El Fuerte

Enjoy the sunrise and the magnificent views from your balcony or the hotel terrace.

After breakfast, your driver will meet you at the hotel reception to take you to the train station.

Today you will once again enjoy the trip on the Chepe Express train to El Fuerte. From the comfort of your wagon you will enjoy the impressive journey with views towards the ravines and a varied vegetation. Pines and oaks in higher places and Amapas, cacti or shrubs in the lower part.

Arrival at El Fuerte, welcome and transfer to the RV Park, where your motorhome is waiting for you.

Today’s stay is optional. You can stay in El Fuerte or go to your next stop.

Before continuing your motorhome trip to other destinations in Mexico, we recommend you take a walk through the city center and a walk along the El Fuerte river. You will enjoy a relaxed atmosphere and endemic nature on the banks of the river of the same name.
