There are many cities in Mexico whose beauty is mainly due to the unique architectural style that dates back to colonial times. Mainly with colorful houses, tile roofs and quarry temples. Cathedrals, beautiful chapels, small cobbled streets, alleys, squares and gardens make these cities places of great tourist importance. Some of these colonial cities are geographically located between mountains, from where you can enjoy impressive views. In this program you will get to know some of the colonial cities of central Mexico.

Day 1
Mexico City - Querétaro - San Miguel de Allende

Our driver will be waiting for you at the reception of your hotel in Mexico City and will take you to the beautiful colonial city of Querétaro, which is approximately 2.5 hours from the Mexican capital. You will visit the Aqueduct of Querétaro, the old Convent of the Cross and the historic center of the city.
Finally, we continue to San Miguel de Allende, a colonial city in Guanajuato. In the afternoon free time to explore this picturesque city, where the famous comedian Cantinflas and other well-known artists and intellectuals lived. The main places of interest are the Gothic cathedral Parroquia de San Miguel Arcángel, the “Capilla de la Santa Casa”, the convent “de la Concepción” and the “Iglesia de San Francisco”, built in the Churrigueresque style. In addition to these religious buildings, a visit to Miguel Allende’s house is also recommended, where there is now a museum. In the many cafes and restaurants you can indulge yourself with culinary delights.

After breakfast, transfer to Dolores Hidalgo, where in 1820 the famous “cry of Dolores” escaped from Father Miguel Hidalgo and symbolized the beginning of the freedom movement. In honor of this national hero, there is a very interesting museum here. Dolores Hidalgo is also the birthplace of the well-known composer José Alfredo Jiménez. After exploring this city, you will continue to Guanajuato, a colonial city that has been declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The “International Cervantes Festival” takes place here every year, a festive event in honor of the Spanish poet Cervantes.
In the afternoon you will experience the charm of this beautiful city, full of small streets and squares. The beautiful streets take you to exciting places such as the university, the Juárez Theater, the Callejón del Beso (where you better kiss, because ignoring this tradition would bring you bad luck for life), and the Diego Rivera house and museum (Frida Kahlo’s husband). The city’s tunnel system is unique in Mexico and will surprise you when you cross the main underground street. Other places of interest include the Museum of Don Quixote and the Mummies.

You start the day with a hearty breakfast and then you will be picked up from your hotel. Today we go to Zacatecas, a beautiful mining town that is also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zacatecas enchants you with beautiful facades made of natural pink stone. You will also be amazed by the Zacatecas Cathedral, which is an excellent example of the Baroque style in Mexico. Experience a spectacular panorama from Cerro de la Bufa. The cable car falls again and you have to visit the El Edén mine.
Back in the city center, you will most likely experience a so-called “callejoneada”. This is a tradition in which buskers roam around with a donkey and play typical folklore. Other optional activities include visiting the Pedro Coronel and Francisco Goitia museums.

Zacatecas – Guadalajara

Transfer to Guadalajara, the capital of Mariachi and Tequila, just after breakfast. Throughout the world, Mexico is associated with this type of folklore and with the fire of the agave.
You will visit the Tlaquepaque art district, where the best handmade items, ceramics, and Talavera souvenirs are made in all of Jalisco. The gallery of Sergio Bustamante, the famous Mexican artist and sculptor, is also located here. You can end the evening in one of the many traditional restaurants with mariachi music.

Guadalajara - Tequila – Guadalajara

After breakfast, you will get to know the best of Guadalajara: the Degollado Theater, the cathedral, the “Rotonda de los Hombres Ilustres” (a monument to Jalisco’s celebrities), the government palace, which is decorated with detailed murals, and the Plaza Tapatia.
In the afternoon, transfer to Tequila, where the most famous Mezcal distilleries are located. You will observe the cultivation of agaves, the plants whose heart is used to burn tequila. During a tour of the distillery, you will learn interesting things about the production process of the national drink. Then I return to Guadalajara.

Guadalajara - Pátzcuaro – Morelia

Today we are going to Pátzcuaro shortly after breakfast. If time permits, we make a brief stop on the way to Rancho Los Tres Potrillos, which belongs to the Mexican singer Vicente Fernández. In Pátzcuaro you will be surprised by the overwhelming colonial charm. By the way, Pátzcuaro means “Door to heaven” in Purépecha, the local language. The beautiful city is known for its original customs and still very traditional people. One of the main attractions is the Basilica of Our Lady of Health, which you should definitely visit. The historic center with its many squares (for example, Vasco de Quiroga and Gertrudis Bocanegra) attracts many visitors.
We continue to Morelia, the “City of Light” with the brightest city center in all of Mexico. Here you can learn more about the legendary colonial routes. Many cafes and restaurants can pamper your palate with their traditional offerings.

Today you will get to know Morelia, which is also a World Heritage Site, even more intensely. The unique atmosphere is characterized by the student style and the pink colonial buildings. The cathedral, the government palace, the Clavijero Palace, the central main square, the confectionery market, the aqueduct and the Guadalupe temple in the San Diego convent – all these buildings are made of natural pink stone. Then back to Mexico City.
